Glen williamson!

Glen Williamson is a Graphic Designer from New York. His innotive design really caught my eye, i love how he uses type in the form of images as it kills two birds with one stone; shows you an image and shows you information/text about the image!
I think this would look lush on the walls of the refectory, maybe in the shape of my logo or the bedfordshire map!
I would however probably use words referring to the refectory, explaining the healthy options ect. I would use the september font so that it still relates back to the college.

Things to use in my design development...

- simple yet effective branding is needed because of the vast amount of colours in the interior design.
- getting rid of the paper posters on the walls.
- lot's of imagery to be used to create a friendlier atmosphere.
- something to promote healthy food
- using recyclable materials to create a better enviroment.
- chalkboards will be good for a low budget as they are resuable.
- bold typography for the signage

Pepsi logo

I like the pepsi logo because i like how the image is behind the text, i think this would look good for the refectory as i think the name should stand out more than the logo.
I like how they have used the british colours, red white and blue.

HTC logo

I really like the htc logo because i love the vibrant green that they have used because it catches your eye as all the other phone companies don't really use vibrant colours in their logos.
I also like how they have used two different fonts for the logo and the slogan, this draws your eye from the logo down to the catchy slogan.
I think we definatley need to find a colour that stands out against all the colours in the refectory, maybe i green like this one would be good?

Nando's logo

I don't really like the Nando's logo because i think there is too much going on... I think there is way too much random detail on the chicken and i don't really understand why there are leaves either side of the writing... However i do like the font and the colours that have been used, they go well together, and the font stands out well because it is bold and has quite a large stroke.

Apple logo

In my opinion, the apple logo looks very sophisticated and well thought out. I like how it has a bite out of it, which is a kind of play on words with 'byte'. I like the monochrome look and how it is kind of see through, i also like how it has been made to look 3D with the shading around the outside.
I think something like this would be really nice for the refectory, espiecally as there are going to be adults going in aswell, i think we need something sophisticated and simple to reflect on the target audience.

Mcdonalds logo

http://logos.wikia.com/wiki/McDonald

On this website you will find the whole Mcdonalds logo history.

I like the Mcdonalds logo because it is so simple yet easily recognisable. I like the Yellow against the black as it really stands out. I also like the fact that they have made the 'm' look like chips because they are yellow and in the shape of chips, which is one of the main products that they sell at Mcdonalds.
For the refectory i think we really need to make it simple yet bold, like this logo. We need to make it simple because of the wide colour scheme.

David Carson!

"David Carson (born September 8, 1954) is an American graphic designer, art director and surfer. He is best known for his innovative magazine design, and use of experimental typography. He was the art director for the magazine Ray Gun, in which he employed much of the typographic and layout style for which he is known. In particular, his art work is defined in the so-called "grunge typography" era."

I love David Carson's work because it is so different and in a way i think it's risky because of the amount of type he puts onto a page, people may not like it.
I like how he uses so many colours blended with imagery in his work, this really catches your eye and even though you can't figure out what most of the writing says, it makes you look closer into it.
I think this would work well to go around the refectory, some imagery with text on... maybe with facts about the college or the food? Maybe we should make it more read-able though or put it in the shape of my logo.

Bryan Patrick Todd!

Bryan is a graphic designer living and working in Louisville, Kentucky where inspiration abounds. He believes in a simple approach, with a strong emphasis on typography and illustrated elements.
I love Bryan's work because i think the typography catches your eye so well, and even though some of it is quite crouded, it's not hard to read and it draws you in and you end up looking at it for ages, looking at all the detail that has gone into it.
For the refectory i think we definatley need great typography, and even though we have to use the september font, i think we also need to add some innotive typography so that it catches peoples eye and makes them want to come in to the refectory.

Nina hunter!

"Nina Hunter, The Academy of Fine Arts MA graduate is an accomplished graphic designer, illustrator and painter based in the UK.
Her diverse yet very unique style and great experience gained her substantial international client base"
I love her style of work because she uses alot of colour and uses lots of different materials in her work, not just a computer!
I really like the pizza image, and think something like this might be nice for the refectory, maybe on the menu or even on the logo, it gives a sense that they sell great food, however i might have to choose a vegatable or fruit to promote the healty options in which the client really wants her target audience to know about.

Max Gregor!

Max is an illustator from Bristol. His exciting and vibrant work combines traditional techniques with a street art sense of feel. These influence's come together to create a style of illustration that is both innovative, unique and edgy.
I love how his work is so bright and colourful, yet still has natural tones such as grey/white to contrast against the bright colours.
I think some work like this would be great for menu designs and maybe to re-create some of his work but paint food and people to go on the walls to give it a friendly feel.

Kate morris!

Kate Moross is a london based designer and illustator.
She has a fascination with three sided shapes, illegible typography, and freeform lettering.
I really like Kate moross's work because it is very modorn and most of her work is simple, she used simple colours that go well together, e.g black and white, red and white.
I love the simplicity of all of her logo's. She used funky text, however still makes sure that it is easy to read and can be recognised. I like how for the record complay one she has used a font that reminds me of the Gun's n' Roses album, she has also kerned the letters so that they are quite far apart to cover more space, however there is still a lot of white space that has been left. I also like how she used some photography, however most of it looks hand drawn/painted/computerised.
I think something like this is what the college refectory needs, a simple yet effective logo and branding, because the refectory uses so many colours in the interior design, it needs a logo that isn't colourful otherwise the logo will not stand out and will most likely not be seen.

Colour!

I started off by looking at a colour wheel and then making one for myself, however using photoshop i found it quite difficult to get the colours right.
I then moved on to using 2 complimentary colours to create a pattern. I like the use of green and pink because they both really stand out and are eye catching, it works because i made sure that both colours were evenly spaced around the pattern.
I then chose blue and orange which are also complimentary colours, which i think go really nicely together and work well, however i think they look quite dark together.
I then chose 3 analogous and put them into my patten, this is my favourite because the colours all go so well together and look neat.

Primary research-Costa Coffee!

Costa is a well known coffee shop, situated throughout England and other countries.
I like the signage espiecally as it is so simple yet with pictures of what they are trying to promote and then using a simple neutral coloured font for the information surrounding, I think for the refectory, we maybe need some large scale images of what they have on offer so that students can actually see something they like and go and buy it!
I really like the colour scheme, although it is quite dark, it makes it feel really cosy when you're inside, and in the cafe it has pictures of people sitting in restaurants to create a warm vibe, i think this is something that the refectory really needs, a warm friendly enviroment.

Menu design

Personally i really like this menu, and even though it's for kids i think it could fit in well at college with a few changes such as giving the images a more adult feel and using the college's font to go with the theme..

I like the chalkboard with the wood around on this menu, it looks formal however with a bit of fun with the fonts that have been used and the fact that they have used a chalkboard. Maybe because of all the colour in the refectory, a black and white chalkboard for a menu would look nice and wouldn't clash, it would also be low budget because chalks are cheap and you can rub it off and reuse it over and over again!

I don't really like this menu because of the colours, they aren't complimentary so they don't go well together. However, i like how they have actually added images of the food so that you know what you are ordering, i think this would be a good thing for the refectory... I also like how there is still some white space, espiecally around the images to make them stand out.

This is another menu that i really like, i love the use of imagery surrounding the text, it really catches your eye and gives it a type of border, instead of just a black and white board with text on.
I think for the refectory we definatley need to use some kind of imagery/drawings to lighten the mood and catch peoples eye as some people may be put off by a lot of text in such a small space.

College/uni refectory interior design

Stourbridge college refectory:

"The college offers a range of places to get a bite to eat.  Each site has a refectory that is managed by our award winning catering team.  They offer a range of delicious hot and cold snacks, sandwiches, light lunches, meals and beverages in addition to vegetarian and healthy eating options – perfect for meeting up with friends when you need a snack between classes."
Our refectories have been awarded Gold Awards from the local Environmental Health Office and our catering staff have increased the range of healthy food choices on offer and introduced a traffic light system whereby students can easily identify red (unhealthy), amber (ok sometimes) and green (healthy)."

I like the simple colours in this design, it reaches out to the target audience of college students as it looks clean, relaxing and a nice place to relax and chill out with your friends and grab something to eat. It looks sophisticated with the 3 colour combo the simple design, i think this is good because when kids come up from school and into college i think they need a different and more grown up/sophisticated environment.
I think for our refectory we need to tone it down a little, make the signage simple yet effective like the interior of this refectory!

The Vista at bury college.

"The pizza and coffee shop is open outside the Beacon Centre and provides a canopy covered outdoor area for students to relax and socialise. The Coffee shop offers fresh Coffee, sandwiches, paninis and cakes and this new development adds to the college's existing cafe's and refectories."

I don't really like the design of this college's refectory as i think it is quite boring, however i like the purple colour as it looks quite modern and a nice colour to use. I don't like how the logo has the 'A' as a capital, i think it would look better just as 'Vista', i do quite like the name as it makes me think of 'visit' and is kind of like a welcoming word. It also reminds me of 'bicester' which is a big shopping centre.

Baker Refectory at Juniata college.

Baker Refectory is "All-You-Can-Eat," as long as guests remain in the dining room. We offer a variety of freshly prepared menu selections for breakfast, lunch and dinner, including fresh baked goods, soups, healthy entrees, vegan/vegetarian selections, made-to-order deli sandwiches, desserts, a salad bar and fresh fruit, along with daily "Smart Choice" selections, homemade pizza and hot grill favorites.

The colour scheme for this refectory is very simillar to the refectory at our college, with the bright colours and it is also a same kind of setting.
I do like the colour scheme as it gives off a friendly kind of student vibe. I also like how the walls are kept quite clear, i think we definatley need to get rid of all of the paper posters around the refectory because they look tacky!

Eatery interior design

'Cocotte' presents a gritty interior design. Their aim was a communal-restaurant-bar, that aims to bring people together (friends and family), their interior design is meant to give off a warm rustic vibe.

I really like the design for this eatery because it is friendly and i love the rusticness, with the colour of the walls and the low lighting. I also really like their logo because it fits perfectly with the interior design, it almost looks a bit distorted and the font is really easy to read. It has primary coloured chairs like in our refectory so i could blend the two ideas, by having the refectories design being so colourful, i think the signage and menu's need to be simple and would be nice if they were rustic like the style of this cafe because i think it can reach out to the target audience of young adults and staff.

Image:

"Amici" are an italian type of restaurant/cafe. Their aims are fresh quality food and a friendly atmosphere at the same time.
I think this cafe is mainly aimed at the older generation, because younger people maybe wouldn't be able to afford to eat here because it is more of a restaurant.
However, i really like the interior design because it is so simple, and unlike most it does look really friendly! I like the natural tones of green against the wooden tables, and the white walls to make the logo stand out, so for our refectory design i need to consider the red wall colour and what colour scheme i can use to the same effect.
I really like the red and green colours they have used, it seems very italian because of the colours in the italian flag and is basic but really eye-catching, i don't like the font though as i think it has too much around the text (swirls and swoosh of paint) and doesn't really fit in with the target audience/simplicity of the interior design, therefore with this in mind, i plan to keep my logo simple.

 Starbucks design goals:
Across the world the store designs are rooted in the coffee heritage, and in their community involvement and environmental responsibility goals. So their designs reflect the character of a store’s surrounding neighbourhood and help reduce environmental impacts. As the stores are built and renovated, they source materials and employ craftsmen on a local basis. They also incorporate reused and recycled elements where possible.

"Our new approach to store design means that our designers are looking at each store individually to ensure that it looks distinctively local. This represents a new level of coffeehouse comfort, meaning that no two Starbucks will ever be entirely the same."
  • Heritage coffeehouses reflect the merchant trading roots of our first store in Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market with worn wood, stained concrete or tiled floors, metal stools and factory-inspired lighting. Large community tables, club chairs and wooden blinds evoke a turn-of-the-last-century feeling.
  • Artisan stores echo the industrial past of urban markets, taking inspiration from the Modernism of the 1930s. This motif celebrates simple materials like exposed steel beams, masonry walls, factory casement glass and hand-polished woodwork in a creative gathering place for culture and the arts.
  • Regional Modern embodies a trend-setting style that is comfortable and welcoming. We use bright, loft-like, light-filled spaces punctuated with regionally inspired furniture and culturally relevant fabrics to create a calm and contemporary respite from the clamour of the fast-paced world.
I really like the layout and interior design of Starbucks because it gives the effect of being enviromentally friendly, and you can tell this from the packaging and all the greens and browns that they use within the shop. I like how the menu's are on chalboards at the back of the counter, this makes them easy to see and gives it a friendly cafe feel, maybe i could use something like this for the refectory?
I also like how they don't really have a target audience, the shop attracts all different kinds of people as it is very neutral and has a really friendly atmosphere with great produce.
